in recent weeks. really, in recent weeks. president obama and speaker boehner were working toward a bigger package that was supposed to deal with the fiscal health, the long-term fiscal health of the country, which was what the fiscal cliff was supposed to be an incentive for. instead, thousanow it's looking there's some sort of measure to deal with the fiscal cliff, the tax hikes set to kick in and president obama wants them to cut off at $250,000 so for folks making less, they don't see their taxes increase and the spending cuts that are set to kick in and it's yet to be determined if that will be part of the smaller measure. we're waiting to see what harry reid comes up with. >> so if he comes up with something, all right, brianna, traveling with the president in honolulu. thank you. dana. >>> the big question is you and brianna were talking about is -- can congress come back here, which they're planning on doing on thursday, and can they figure some way to avert an economic disaster? joining me to talk about that and more, richard is back with us, former writer for clinton and nice to
landed in a baby stroller. >>> prest barack obama is coming back to try to avoid the fiscal cliff. the announcement comes after house speaker john boehner's plan "b" was rejected thursday. without a deal, tax increases will take affect in the new year. >>> a man named firefighter of the year was one of the victims killed in the attack yesterday. william sprangeller tried to lure them. he shot four firefighters yesterday and took his own life. two firefighters died and one of them was a police lieutenant and volunteer firefighter who had been with his town's police for 20 years. mourners turned out last night to remember those who were killed. >> we are strong people, our community is there for everybody. >> two other firefighters were injured and the fire spread to more homes and they will search for more victims today. >>> now they are looking for the people responsible. that shooting happened at 6:00 on 11th avenue near 12th -- east 12th street. the woman was taken to the hospital where she is listed in critical condition. >>> an apparent shootout between two cars in west oaklan
boehner. white house and congressional leaders have until january 1 to lork out a budget deal. resident obama is in hawaii on udget dn. nancy cordes is there as well. nancy, good evening. nancy, goor: jeff, this would : sentially be a last-ditch effort to avert the fiscal ially be sources tell us that aides to the president have been in talks preliminary talks, with aides to senate majority leader harry elf who himself was here in hawaii this weekend for the funeral of senator daniel inouye. eid is now working, we're told, on a smaller package than the comprehensive deal than the president was working on with speaker boehner. than tmall package would prevent tax rates from rising for middle-class, perhaps cut some spending and tie up a few other loose ends. so far, though, senator reid has so fbeen in touch with republicans over this plan. blicans ovent and the first lady as you mentioned, are here in hawaii. th atte also attended senator inouye's funeral this weekend. this is the president's first real vacation, jeff, in about a year. real nut he's cutting it short, heading home later
it's interesting just to kind of recap what's going on here. before president obama and house speaker john boehner were working on a much bigger package obviously, not just to avoid the fiscal cliff but to try and tackle the long-term fiscal health of the country, trying to overall it was expected to raise some taxes, try to deal with entitlement reform and tax reform, those other big things like entitlement reform and tax reform get kicked into the new year, dana, so it's the gift that keeps on giving on this cli clifftmas. >> taking this pretty far. one of the key questions is whether or not senate democratic leader harry reid will be able to get enough republicans in the senate to vote on anything that will keep taxes low and maybe cut some spending. is the white house optimistic enough that the president might come back early to -- maybe he thinks he might have something to sign? >> i think it is expected that the president will come back early. probably whether or not he has something to sign because -- because obviously he's going to have to even maybe be twisting arms and lobby
infuriating to me when people go on about how obama really believes that the only way to do this is so bipartisan and that he's still waiting for john boehner and mitch mcconnell to become decent. of course he doesn't think that. but he knows that he's not mitt romney saying 47% of the country are people that i have nothing to do with and i don't care about. he knows that he's the president of the people of the united states which includes 47 percent ironically who voted for mitt romney. and so you know, you have to be able to say, well, why is the first african american man to run for the office of president not willing to say as he's running for president, "oh, and by the way i believe in gay marriage in 2008." i get it. it's easy to understand that. and if what that means is that i have to wait for the day that a president says, "i believe i same sex marriage," i'm willing to wait. and i waited and he said it. this man believes what we believe and i actually got a chance to say this to him. >> to obama? >> that, you know, lincoln at one point in the lincoln-douglas was disappointed
bring down the cost of medicare by making it available to more people is a terrible idea of mr. boehner's. the idea -- i would be terribly upset, along with many of my friends, if obama compromised too much on what needs to happen that is called the fiscal cliff. >> do you think a prominent third-party would help our country? >> i felt strongly about that when i supported john anderson in 1979. he was -- a large part of anderson's campaign was to sue the state ballot procedure into allowing third parties to have more access to the electoral process. i would like to see a third party available, but that, too, seems like a really tall order. >> what do you think is the appropriate role for actors and celebrities to play in the political arena? >> i think if you are a really motivated committed citizen who feels very strongly about either an issue or a candidate, you get involved. you go out and do it regardless of what it means. as i said, i have got this long history as a yellow-dog democrat liberal, and i do not think anyone is surprised to see me, and i think my republican friends tole
